@monkey @vriska one time in AP English one of them used the whiteboard to explain the Mormon mythos and what they're supposed to do on earth between planets (the one they were on before and the next one) and I'll never forget it, it was insane

@vriska agree. my personal worst 4 states are what I like to term the hell quadrant (oklahoma, kansas, arkansas, missouri), then tidewater america (maryland, virginia, the carolinas) which is the blue version of the aforementioned hell quadrant, then everything else is case by case.

@anemone @vriska @eris @monkey if southern protestants got me to start hating christians again, dealing with mormons would probably have me joining a left-wing christian death squad

@vriska @eris @monkey the main similarity is just the Secretive Rituals but the mormon secretive rituals are kinda benign in comparison based on my understanding of the scientologist secretive rituals

@ikeWren @monkey @eris idk I think saying that aliens came to earth in a commercial jet and live inside of volcanos and you need to have L'Ron Hubbards Magic Mystery Machine exercise you of all of your sins is just as insane as "the garden of eden is in missouri and the mormon elder psychics give you astrology readings by feeling up your scalp for hours (especially if you're a 16 year old girl) and if you donate all of your money to us you geet to be god of your own planet"

@Merc @monkey @anemone @lewdthewides @vriska @eris a lot of people make this argument because they have their own book of scripture but mormons still do believe all the most fundamental christian stuff (i.e. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, died for your sins, etc etc etc) and do still consider themselves christian . the subtitle of the book of mormon is literally "another testament of Jesus Christ" . so i think it makes the most sense to consider mormons christian . compare to the other abrahamic religions , which do not venerate jesus christ as their Savior and whatnot

@ikeWren @monkey @vriska @eris not related to mormonism, but my dad keeps around a facsimilie of what he believes the old testament anointing oil was, on top of the usual suspects which are listed in the text, it's infused with cannabis because he believes it had it but the cultural context implying it was lost so it has to be personally inferred from whatever perceived scraps of info were left in the text (typical prot behavior)

@ikeWren @monkey @vriska @eris fr i grew up with my mom saying shit about how there used to be a second planet stacked on top of earth and the 10 lost tribes of israel went on it and then the planet moved away and that’s why theyre gone

or that mormon god the father is a link in a chain of gods and he’s ours and those in the celestial kingdom get their owns and also that my mom is going to hell according to mormonism bc she left the mormon church, and the family trips to utah where all the soda was caffeine free bc they hadnt said cold caffeinated drinks were okay yet, and the talk about how my mom’s own sister basically wouldnt talk to her for a year while they lived in the same house bc she left the church and how she got super excommunicated (mormon missionaries still arent allowed to step on the property where she lives. they have a contract with usps so they can keep track of that)

actually maybe its good they changed a lot. a little of the silly should have stuck around though

@ikeWren @monkey @anemone @Merc @lewdthewides @vriska @eris iirc a corporeal father is like very much a thing of mormon theology even if de-emphasized and idk how you can do that without social trinitarianism tbh

@lizzie @monkey @anemone @Merc @lewdthewides @vriska @eris oh yeah for sure mormons are very much social trinitarians it's just a kind of ridiculous thing to disqualify them from christianity for and not even an original piece of theology

@Merc @allison @anemone @eris @ikeWren @lewdthewides @monkey @vriska as long as simplicity is not denied i dont see why it would be objectionable tbh. if they start to challenge that simplicity then id question whether it can be considered christian. my church does count mormon baptism’s fwiw thoug more bc they de-emphasize intent (which i think is correct and something they should go harder on tbh)

@lizzie @Merc @allison @anemone @eris @ikeWren @lewdthewides @monkey @vriska
> Social trinitarianism is a Christian interpretation of the Trinity as consisting of three persons, each person having their own center of consciousness. These persons are united in a loving relationship, which reflects a model for human relationships.[1][2] The teaching emphasizes that God is an inherently social being.[3] Human unity approaches conformity to the image of God's unity through self-giving, empathy, adoration for one another, etc. Such love is a fitting ethical likeness to God but is in stark contrast to God's unity of being.[4]

seems pretty much the teaching i saw all the time in my ☦️ days

trying to imagine the contradiction of this and not getting much that can't be said to be modalism (EDIT: or the denial of the "is not" on that shield diagram, which i now notice is the illustration for this wiki entry)

@ophis @Merc @allison @anemone @eris @ikeWren @lewdthewides @monkey @vriska yeah this actually seems extremely nicene to me? idk “center of consciousness” could be used to describe something heretical but i don’t see cause to assume that. thats part of why i refocused any objection on whether or not it denies divine simplicity, which nicaea’s homousios necessitates
