@nautilus i was reading up on the etymology -- it derives from "hobby-horse," the implication that it is "an activity that goes nowhere." now it depends on how you define "going nowhere", but it seems to be either a) an activity that you're doing purely as a pastime (something i'm not entirely wired to do, as most of the things i do "for fun" are years- or life-long projects that i take very seriously, or it's b) any activity that isn't done professionally for pay, which is the most horrific capitalist-realism-brained shit i've ever heard.
