Look I'm just going to say that if your ~amazing takedown~ of Elite Transgender Liberals is published by fucking Harvard, you're not as subaltern as you think you are

@julieofthespirits of all the essays to get turned into books... why'd it have to be the one I was already exhausted from seeing shared by transfeminists who should know better...

@julieofthespirits I will say that this was the nyc area in the early 2010s and her β€œradical” turn was years away and never anything more than academic when real shit was going down all around

@Parasite @julieofthespirits I'm super interested too. especially given her recent "transgender liberals are keeping us true transsexuals down" schtick

@julieofthespirits being able to afford the sticker price of a university press book places you pretty firmly above the bottom of the ladder

@julieofthespirits i would like to actually read enough to think intelligently about gender but i just have this pervading sense that it’s a million tiny island cliques with their own little gateways and doorkeeps and all of them are dumb as fuck

@OctaviaConAmore @Parasite @julieofthespirits aha, found the article:

The umbrella- and beyond-the-binary definitions of transgender created by non-profits, scholars, and other middle-class professionals, which have for decades taken great pains to demote the importance of gender dysphoria and medical transition, made the plaintiffs’ job very hard. Considering the full history of the concept of transgender and its politics (the subject of my next book), I don’t attribute this solely to cleverness on the part of conservative jurists. Transgender arose among middle-class people who sought to emancipate themselves from stigmatized and downwardly mobile transsexuals by not transitioning. The anti-transsexual mission of transgender, in brief, was not designed to protect the right to medical transition.

@YKantRachelRead @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite I love how she says "middle class professionals" like she's not one

like there's nothing wrong with being a middle class professional and writing about gender

but you can't pretend you have a class position that you don't

@julieofthespirits @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite yep, exactly. the idea of someone with a Ph.D, published by Harvard, being the spokesperson for lower-class transsexuals is absurd on its face.

but on the other hand, if this causes white trans people to finally realize that A Short History of Trans Misogyny was written by a hack all along, then maybe something good will come out of it

@YKantRachelRead @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite I don't think they will though, I honestly think JGP's shooters are dumb as shit

Like afaik she's never offered an explanation as to why she's switched from "travestis are the most subversive trans subidentity" to "transsexuals are the most subversive trans subidentity" even though *that is a very extreme shift* (this also might be my fault??) and anyone who doesn't get how *weird* that shift is, is probably pretty stupid

@YKantRachelRead @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite also just the fact that "how many medical interventions do you have" nearly always comes down to "how much money you have"?

@julieofthespirits @YKantRachelRead @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite yeah this is kinda bizarre to me. i guess you could argue that the need for medical interventions produces a need to earn money and that that produces a certain type of politics vis a vis Work (sex work, woodworking, etc) but like....idk i feel like theres clearly not a clean cut between transgender and not medically transitioning and transsexual medically transitioning here.

@Bike @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite @YKantRachelRead there's really not, and the girlies with the most interventions tend to break down to 1) the ones who need to make a living from their body, who are often extremely marginalized but pour the money they make back into their body in order to keep making money and 2) the richest bitches in the community, who can do whatever without really thinking about it, while the ones with the least interventions are 3) the girlies who are kind of poor but don't have to make a living with their body

and it seems like this book is Group Two trying to appropriate the political capital of Group One

@Bike @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite @YKantRachelRead like I am finally considering getting my tits done, but only because there's a pathway that finally opened up for the government to pay for it, but I'm not entirely sure it'll work (depends more on the government than on me), and also I hate all the girls who make fun of their peers for not having had their tits done, because usually it's a form of classist bullying

@julieofthespirits @OctaviaConAmore @Parasite @YKantRachelRead especially when you get into the details of like, experience of Work. obvi in a us context where insurance is employer determined that changes the way trans people and medical intervention interact, but like....dignity at the workplace cuts across transgender/transsexual lines and is part of why the new wave of US unionism is heavily trans!

@Bike @OctaviaConAmore @julieofthespirits @Parasite I feel like the synthesis here is that Jules really, badly wants to find a singular source or origin for trans women's woes, and the answers she keeps coming to are things that only a career western gender studies academic would ever arrive at

@Parasite @OctaviaConAmore @julieofthespirits omg, looking at his webpage, I found... this:

Kadji is currently at work at:

Trans Materialism without Gender Identity, an academic monograph that argues in favor of abandoning gender identity as the core principle of transgender politics, culture, and medicine. The monograph uses trans materialism as a method for analyzing the life paths and transition methods of passing men, street queens, heterosexual crossdressers, and transsexual women across the nineteenth and twentieth century. I demonstrate that material conditions played a greater role than gender identity in the transitions of each group. The lesson of this history, I argue, is a materialist politics of class solidarity with poor and sex-working trans women of color over and against the middle-class transgender hegemony promoted by the concept of gender identity.

what the fuck even

@julieofthespirits @Bike @Parasite @YKantRachelRead not just classist, but also privilage in general, I think frog_think even if I had the ability to get any operations done, considering I'm bedridden already, any operation that isn't needed for physical survival is probably a risk to life at this point bear_shrug (and that's ignoring any physical help that'd be needed to fulfill daily needs while recovering... having people around who can spare time, energy, and opportunity cost for that sort of thing isn't exactly something we all have just spilling out o' our pockets)
