@junebug this is unironically a really good point about animal breeding being rooted in eugenics though. like how rhodesian ridgeback puppies born without ridges are frequently killed

@nautilus @junebug dog show people sometimes get a little disparaging about cat show people, like "oh you know every cat breed was invented in the 70s, dog shows go back to the 19th century." anyway you can shut them down at least temporarily by saying oh that's interesting, what were the members of the AKC doing in the 1930s" (founding eugenics societies, mostly)

@amagire @junebug the connection between human eugenics and dog breeding is really ironic considering that inbreeding and the founder effect are known causes of health problems in any population. but somehow this magically doesn't apply to purebred dogs and cats
