thinks so google pay doesnt work on graphene for contactless but
i could just put the card into the phone case and get the exact same result
@whitequark noooo how dare you not cram everything you need to navigate society into a single point of failure
@desea we always carry two phones for partly this reason
@whitequark yes, lots of banking apps don't work either because having them on a secure OS without tracking is "dangerous".
@cynicalsecurity it's just anticompetitive bullshit
@whitequark maybe im just paranoid but if my method of paying for stuff can run out of battery i dont want to rely on it where possible
@desea and a backup battery
and sometimes also printouts
@desea and a charger obviously
@whitequark like yes i can mitigate stuff with backups, i do have a powerbank with me at all times but i typically dont go anywhere purely relying on navigation without any concept of how to get there and back for example its just i NEED this to work at my most inconvenienced
@desea i treat satnav as the same kind of deal as my meds
yeah i can lose it. but if i do i have much bigger problems
@whitequark unless you need the phone to also do NFC for other reasons (such as if you've got tokens set up to do automation, or in our case for only letting our alarm turn off once we're out of bed). we've found the phone's attempt to use NFC when near a reader will still interfere with the card
@tempest also if you want to use two cards, etc
@whitequark @cynicalsecurity but y would u switch to graphene and then give ur banking info to google
@jodoktus @cynicalsecurity because i cannot think of a single thing i would meaningfully achieve by withholding that
@jodoktus @cynicalsecurity i don't run stock firmware because i hate the UI. it is not primarily a security thing. if i run stock firmware i do want it to be at least AVB-signed (for border crossings), and i used to do this with LineageOS, but i can't really use taxi apps without gplay anymore, so, graphene it is
@whitequark @cynicalsecurity Ok fair.I guess the banking apps don't trust thesandboxedgoogleplay services and tbh it may be good signe that banking apps detect that there is something wrong with the google security stuff.(The implementation is shit of course)
@jodoktus @cynicalsecurity lol no if you run something like magisk it's trivial to circumvent it i think to this day?
@whitequark @cynicalsecurity never tried banking apps and magisk together
@jodoktus @cynicalsecurity that's one of the big reasons people use magisk ime
