I had just gotten back from town, still outside, by the neighbour's. a bright display of colors streaked across the night sky, like an aurora and a rainbow. I had dropped my belongings on the ground, duffle bag, jacket and what have you. I rushed to grab my phone, but as I was trying to find an angle unobscured by the trees, it faded away. absolute disappointment.

my dear grandmother, who does in fact live in that house irl, had noticed me running about from up on the second floor, and hailed me from the window. I told her about the beautiful display of colors, and as I looked out at that part of the night sky, I saw many shooting stars. I started to panick, because I knew what they meant.

as I headed to my house, rummaging through my stuff to find the key inside, the sky had turned a morning orange. I looked up and... there it was. a massive rock enveloped in flame, shining as bright as the sun, hurtling closer and closer. there was no time to take shelter. "Yep," I announced, "we're all gonna die!" I tracked it with my gaze as it came down, and stared directly into the impact. it was as if the world froze, for certainly I had already died, and there was a light brighter than anything before. I heard it, too, the explosion as it struck the ground.

When I came to, I was staring at a photo, taken from where I had been standing during a lush summer day. the chestnut trees, then covered in green foliage, standing tall and proud. What of myself? Surely I had not survived? I couldn't tell. the video/relief effort had been sponsored by—
