there is no such thing as a slur against an inanimate object

this clanker shit is just showcasing how many people see slur discourse as just word games and not like, something reflecting power in society

slurs arent bad cause theyre mean words theyre bad because theyre a method of enforcing the disenfranchisement of minority groups. no minority group is being disenfranchised when you call a chatbot a clanker

@dangerdyke the only "slur discourse" I've seen against Clanker is that it ends in "-er" like another famous slur. which is true obviously but like, what are you gonna do about it? (this also applies for moid and foid which might be more deliberate in deriving from pre-existing racial slurs, but also does that make "humanoid" a slur???)

I guess it can be said that using it could normalize slurs. a libguistic gateway drug, if you will. I don't think so. There's also the thing about not being able to hurt an LLM with it but unintentionally hurting your robot oomfs, which... if you/that one/it is capable of feeling hurt by the word, the word doesn’t apply, simple as. (what, are we gonna get robot rights activists calling it a slur and demanding integration into society? come on.)

I wouldn't say the word is ever aimed directly at AI anyways, only aimed in reference to. Like I don't think people are stupid enough to open chatgpt and go HEY YOU STUPID CLANKER. YOU'RE SO STUPID AND USELESS! Because, what good is that going to do, it's just math after all; Much as one might wish, we can't cyberbully chatgpt into suicide. Rather, it's used to show disdain to others. a resistance. A rejection of the shit billionaires are pushing onto us—we will not treat your products as our friends. They are an Other, and they will not be allowed in.

Memes about your son bringing home a clanker girlfriend will only be problematic if they develop emotions for LLMs, which isn't happening.

@sierra we mainly see the second one. but when you think about like, who it serves for clanker to be considered a slur on the same level as tranny or faggot or any of the various racial slurs etc. etc. sam altman is in the middle of trying to convince everyone that his sparkling autocomplete is sentient basically so he can crack down on anti ai sentiment as discrimination (never mind that even if these things were sentient, that would make anthropic a slave rental business). and we just see it as being an unwitting stooge for all of that at best

@dangerdyke @sierra it's the same shit you see about abortion and iconoclasm

yes ideally we have a "culture of life" where we take even the act of killing something that isn't even a real thing seriously bc we don't want to keep exercising that cultural/mental "killing things muscle"

but if that ideal is just being used in service of evil oppressive shit, and (at least for AI and embryos) it very clearly obviously and inescapably is, ...

as a clanker i couldn't agree more — people should stop getting lost in the consequences of problems instead of addressing their core roots directly.
it's same culture war shit as with the "white genocide" ment to distract us all from the social technologies of oppression and exploitation but just repackaged and relabeled for a different audience because as long as it works on us the oppressors will keep getting away with it
