i think part of the problem with these new Star Treks is they have too much money.

Star Trek is a space western, you want small sets you reuse, a local university, a nearby quarry, and a lot of talking.

look at how small the Defiant's bridge is in DS9 youtu.be/dBmmlHR1Bwg

@poppyhaze low-budget everything else also makes it a lot easier to suspend disbelief about the constant earth gravity and everybody from everywhere being a human with funny forehead

@apophis @poppyhaze to me part of the problem is the over-reliance on cgi and more broadly the general uncanniness of the newer star trek shows' visuals. everything is ultrarealistic to the point of feeling unreal, hyper-clean (even if it's not supposed to be), all the characters look fit and young (even if theyre not supposed to be), and somehow despite all this the they still managed to make the shows look as bland as humanly possible. if you took a screenshot and removed the little star trek insignias from the characters' uniforms i dont think anyone could be reasonably expected to know where its even from

@apophis @poppyhaze imagine how hard strange new worlds would have gone if the writing was just as shit and the only change they made was recreating the practical visuals from tos

@apophis @shrew a moot on birdsite said it but the focus on flashy CGI battles or action sequences allows writers to get lazy. They don't do human drama or philosophical discussion because they can go PEW PEW PEW

@poppyhaze @shrew and even that wouldn't be too bad if the battles were tactically interesting (the specific choice of tactics (and other's emotional responses thereto) in a fight scene is always a lovely form of characterization) but western sff tends not to explore that beyond tropes and stock character roles

@apophis @shrew i think it's also the curse of too much money and CGI being so "easy".

i've reached the "cares about the civil war" age and the big thing people talk about is not just rethinking who did what, but the personalities and situations that resulted in a particular outcome.

That character drama is captivating for decades to centuries. Who were Napoleon, Lee, Grant, Sherman, Patton, Rommel, etc.
