the discord replacement i want is basically a chatroom with:

- ability to embed media in your message
- emoji reacts
- control over who's allowed in and who can see the content
- persistent channels you can bookmark and leave and return to (and catch up on) at will

screen sharing and voice chat are overrated

@apophis
Could almost do that with an old-fashioned web forum?

@ddlyh i had intended the "basically a chatroom" to do more work than you might think

forum usually implies longer form, less immediate responses, posts that may need to be archived later

like i think there's a gradient of ideal permanency:

voice/video chat
chatroom
twitter/fb-like social media post
blog comment
forum post
guestbook comment
tumblr post (ranked so much further down than other social media because of how reblogs work)
blog post
video post
static web page

@lizzie this isn't about importance but how fast or slow the exchanges are going to be and how much you'd expect to be looking at this thing years later (without keeping a log of your own at the time)

@apophis doesn't pleroma provide all of these? debatable on the fourth item, but still kinda. add in a mumble server and an owncast instance and you pretty much have the full suite.

@apophis pleroma has chat, though i think it's just 1-to-1. add an IRC on i suppose.

edit: or not, mumble has text chat and rooms too.
