one reason i've always hated this song so much is that it so perfectly encapsulates, not in any remotely satirical or critical way but leaning into it in the most soul-deadening hint-hint-wink-wink modern sort of way, the way christmas shit just mindlessly apes these stupid leftover rehashed bled-dry unnaturally preserved and reanimated husks of trite 19th-century tropes and symbols without any last remaining vestigial pretence of context

perhaps similar things could be said of my favourite christmas music, but the deliberate absurdity has not yet aged to the point where the humour has long died and left no trace and we only piously replicate without thought or consciousness or soul
