something happened to my wii

this actually took longer to do then it probably should have, because i had to figure out how to change the banners of the system channels, but have them, like, still be the system channels when you launch them. and i can excitedly report that i did in fact manage to do this... for all channels except for the forecast channel. that one caused the wii to hang for some reason, so the forecast channel doesn't exist anymore, that's fine wii fit is more important than the weather anyway. the wii has checks for whether the system channels have been fucked with, and if it detects that they have been then the disc channel instead says "system update" and prompts you to update the wii instead of showing/launching the disc, but luckily priiloader has a system menu hack that let me disable that check, so the disc channel also shows wii fit

and the homebrew channel has some checks which detect if it's been tampered with and make it show a big scam warning if it is, so changing the homebrew channel to wii fit required me to compile the homebrew channel from source and install it like that, and it doesn't build without some patches to make it work with the latest versions of stuff, so that was a fun time. and even now i think it might still be a little broken, cuz sometimes when homebrew tries to exit the loader it crashes the wii, and i haven't looked into that yet

and all of the other wii fit channels Work, they launch wii fit through usb loader gx. but when i first installed them all i forgot to set the IOS they launch with so they were all broken, so i had to fix all of them and uninstall/reinstall them all, which is a super tedious process which is probably possible to automate it but i did it the manual labor way

a friend suggested that i sell the wii but without saying anything unusual about it, and i think that's a fucking hilarious idea but i'm not sure if i'm actually gonna do it, probably not, but either way i figured hm it would be funny if i could just, delete the factory reset button from the wii settings. so whoever owns the wii is stuck with it. and uh that's what i'm working on rn, cuz i think that's actually doable

@sebastian >the wii has checks for whether the system channels have been fucked with
huh why?

@vyivel vague anti-piracy reasons i guess?? i'm honestly surprised it still lets you use the wii at all and doesn't just show the banner brick message

@steffo it's the same one used in the hackmii installer. it's super fuckin annoying cuz it only lets you continue after a few minutes where you just kinda have to stare at it and do nothing

i feel like i first learned about this from a fedi post, but i can't find it, so: the wii system settings are literally just webpages: https://marcan.st/transf/wiisettings/US2/iplsetting.ash/FIX/US/ENG/index01.html
so i *should* be able to just unpack/decompress the wad, delete the html for the button, and then recompress/repack everything. and i've already done exactly this (this took a while because there's like 3 different proprietary file formats to step through), but i'm scared to try installing it on my wii so i've been putting it off lol
i'm not really sure why, like i'm pretty sure the worst thing that could happen is that it crashes when booting, but that's not a problem because i have priiloader, but like. also. i'm literally installing a custom system menu. that feels like a very big thing

i think i might have 2 wii menus installed rn

hm ok so, current system menu status:

- the system update and factory reset buttons are no longer visible, but you can still select them

- the priiloader system menu hack that disables the checks for if the system channels are tampered with is now broken, because i'm using a Counterfeit wii menu. so the disc channel says "Wii System Update", and that's an issue. i'm pretty sure the priiloader system menu hacks are literally just stored in a .ini file on the sd card though, so i might be able to somehow fix it, if i can figure out what the new memory address that needs to be modified is, or something

- i'm genuinely amazed that i managed to replace the fucking system menu first try and not break everything

oh apparently opening the save data management thing crashes the wii. that's an issue.

i have no idea if this is related to my modified system menu or if it's been an issue ever since i fucked with the nand to replace the system channels, i haven't tried this until now
(i was curious if the system menu would show up in data management as a thing you could uninstall, since i don't think it's installed as a system channel)

Oh i uninstalled priiloader, somehow
it's.... a very good thing i didn't fuck up the system menu because that literally would've bricked the wii

i feel like reinstalling priiloader might be a Bad idea?? cuz if it's meant to be installed with the Real system menu then it might corrupt shit if i try to install it on this one, i have no idea. and if priiloader corrupts the system menu then i'm actually just screwed

ok cool so the new system menu did in fact overwrite the old one, so it is installed as a system title. i think that's good???

ok i reinstalled the original system menu and priiloader is still missing. but i think i should be able to install it now without worrying about anything??

ok awesome, priiloader installed, everything is fine i think
i wonder if it's possible to fuck with the system menu while keeping priiloader intact? i should look into how priiloader even works

> WARNING: If you update, install or uninstall any System Menu it REMOVES Priiloader and you should reinstall it immediately to stay protected.

ah. cool

@sebastian This is what it feels like going to the Wii section of any second hand store.

@jp no joke this is exactly why i started collecting wii fits, because i realized that literally every game store has like *at least* 10-15 wii fits, without exception, often even more than that, and they're always being sold for dirt cheap

@sebastian I thought of a less destructive approach of using Priiloader patches to just visually set everything to be Wii Fit.

I've tried to do this in Dolphin but I couldn't get Priiloader to work with the built-in loader and the Homebrew channel (the version that supposedly works in Dolphin) just crashes when opened. So idk, maybe the default NAND is busted, I don't have a dump of a real one to test unfortunately.

@yyp hm.. that might be a good idea? i Might try that but also i already spent so long getting everything to Actually be wii fit so like i'm not sure it's worth it. unless i can't get the homebrew channel to work, or i realize something else is broken, idk

@yyp actually i can send you a dump of my nand if you want to fuck around with it, i can't atm but i can in a bit if you want

@sebastian @fish Heh, at some point your amount of Wii Fit isn't gonna Fit.

@lanodan @fish genuinely yeah i haven't figured out what i'm gonna do when i get more, i kinda have like the perfect amount rn to fill up the space but there's no room to grow. i need a bigger shelf or something

@sebastian priiloader moves the system menu "somewhere else" and sits where the system menu normally would be.

@CauseOfBSOD where is this "somewhere else"? is it somewhere that i could easily replace?
