They don’t make sense within the current shell design. There’s nothing to minimize to, like a dock or window list, and it’s potentially confusing, since users will not know where their windows have gone.

WHY IS THERE NOWHERE FOR THEM TO GO TO. WHY NOT PUT SOMEWHERE IN THE OPERATING ENVIRONMENT FOR THEM TO GO TO, THATS THE WHOLE THING WITH AN ENVIRONMENT IS YOU MAKE PLACES FOR THINGS TO GO TO. HAVING NOWHERE TO GO MEANS YOU NEED TO MAKE SOMEWHERE TO GO NOT REMOVE BUTTONS EVERYONE USES!!!!!

@astrid im sure people with motor control issues that cant reliably drag to snap love having that and not just like, a button that works like its always worked, and can be hooked into various accessibility tools as needed. you know. for starters.

People with motor control issues can use the existing super + ArrowUp shortcut or map it to something that works for them. Which they'd be aware of since the trouble of using the mouse would've already left them with a way to search for and work with keyboard shortcuts.

But given you're apparently on a trip here, this will make for an easy addition to my blocklist.

also as an addenum after further overnight and shower thoughts on this topic, there IS A problem with the min/max/close paradigm in that a very destructive action (close) is right next to two common operations (minimize/maximize) but there are much less poison-pilled solutions to this problem, like putting min/max or the close button on the left, or the WM including its own "are you sure?" dialog, or tuning the click targets to avoid common misclick scenarios, etc. the answer is not like. removing all the buttons.

@anna we actually figured out a long time ago what to do with windows if there wasnt a dock or window list. it's called ICONIFY them !!! this is the UNIX way!!!! stop trying to invent new paradigms we SOLVED desktops in 1993.

@haematophage gnome hates every desktop paradigm that was in windows 3.0 and onward, and everything in unix WMs and MacOS period

@anna gnome is all the worst design decisions of windows 8, and then some

like im coming upon an all encompassing theory that the more trannies, furfags, and tranny furfags work on software the better it is (kde, krita, akkoma) and the worst software is made by techbros and techbro fascists (javascript, anything from suckless, omarchy, gnu imp ["the gimp"]) which really makes me wonder what the mix is over at gnome. like i doubt there's no trannies or furfags working on it, but the ratio can't be that good. or are the decisions made by techbros? idk. very cishet white male coded to decide whatever inane shit fits your aesthetics should be forced on everyone

@anna it's crazy that windows fucking 10 is easier to customise than the modern gnome desktop it's crazy that THIS is what mainstream linux is for some reason going with. and now KDE with their plasma extension stuff also making things harder to unify and customise as the end user. why does my fricking qt6ct theme not impact half of the KDE programs I install!!! im installing them SPECIFICALLY because I want to use a Qt program and NOT GTK because GTK hates me and Qt is relatively pliable to my wills but NOOOO fucking Snake NEEEEEEDS to have modern sleek design

@haematophage a lot of my happiness in kde is contingent on that i am very satisfied with breeze-dark and just want to use the default thing. it looks like kde is.... better for customization but also like you can't get too weird with it.

@EeveeEuphoria yeah everything started shifting into focus when i found out that the head dev of krita is a trans woman and ive been breathlessly recommending it over the vile gnu imp or more fly-by-night things that no longer compile or get updates. and then i recall like any time i encounter a KDE developer and they talk about their personal life they're somewhere in the alphabet soup

@EeveeEuphoria yeah what i've wanted is basically just paint.net for linux but ive learned to work with krita and been stronger for it (guess what i made op in lol)

won't be my main art program since i've been using inkscape since like, fuckin 12 years ago lol

still tho, if it can do pixel art of the sorts, and has decent filters, maybe i'll actually try switching to it

i mean if i learned the convoluted ass way gimp does things, surely krita would actually be easier to learn by being sensical

@EeveeEuphoria im not super good at these things but gnu imp makes me want to go on a spree and krita reminds me more of the photoshops i pirated in the late 90s/00s and ive managed well

i quite like inkscape i need to come up with some excuses to learn to use it
